“Key to fame”

Pune Mirror · 7 September 2014 · by Divya Parikh

The Pune Mirror covered Shirley’s Con Brio win in a full-page feature, reporting that she had beaten six semi-finalists from across the country and played to a packed auditorium at the NCPA in Mumbai.

The piece also carried the detail that has followed her since: that her family could not afford both music classes and an instrument, so her mother drew piano keys on the coffee table for her to practise finger movements on, and sat with her daily while she did.

It is worth knowing, if you are wondering whether this school understands students who are starting without advantages.

Con Brio

The festival behind the win.

Con Brio is India's most prominent piano festival-competition, hosted by the 149-year-old music house Furtados. It remains a fixture in our calendar — we prepare students for it, and we go.

What parents say

  • I am so grateful to have found Shirley Manuel as a piano teacher for my child. Shirley is knowledgeable, patient, and encouraging. She has a deep understanding of music theory and piano technique, and she is able to communicate these concepts to the student in a clear and concise way. Over the past 1.5 years, my daughter has made significant progress in her piano playing.
